The Dominican Republic MPI will be available for use by public institutions so that they can adjust and improve their public policies which will facilitate direct tracking of the variables that characterise poverty, highlighting advances made.
The MPI was developed by the University of Oxford as a complement to existing income poverty measures. It is based on the Alkire Foster method and was presented by the United Nations Development Programme at the 2010 Global Human Development Report. The concept of multidimensional poverty takes into account multiple deprivations in the areas of health, education and quality of live without limiting itself exclusively to low income.
Next week both of these countries will present their new Multidimensional Poverty Indices as a complement to their income poverty measure and as a tool for improved social policy and targeting of resources. Both governments have worked with OPHI in the development of their MPI.
