Jean Drèze, development economist, activist, and professor at Ranchi University (India) has come out with a new book entitled “Sense and Solidarity: Jholawala Economics for Everyone.” Drèze joined via Skype to discuss his book on 24 November 2017 at the Oxford Department of International Development. Following his talk, several students and professors at Oxford offered some reflections and comments. The event was moderated by Sabina Alkire, Director of OPHI.

Global MPI 2018 Launch
On 20 September at UN Headquarters in New York, the 2018 global Multidimensional Poverty Index (global MPI) results were launched. The event was hosted by UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner. He was joined by Nobel Laureate Sir Angus Deaton, OPHI Director Sabina Alkire, Acting Vice President at the World Bank Akihiko Nishio, Assistant Secretary-General at UN DESA Elliott Harris, Executive Director of CESR Ignacio Saiz, HDRO Director Selim Jahan, and OPHI Research Officer Usha Kanagaratnam.

Presentations from the MPPN Meeting 2016
Participants from more than 30 countries and international agencies gathered at the 4th Annual Meeting of the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN) on the 8 and 9 of November, 2016, in Acapulco, Mexico. This conference was an opportunity for sharing experiences on multidimensional poverty measurement among a growing network of countries and experts from around the world.
Video of El Salvador national MPI
On October 20, 2015, El Salvador officially launched its MPI. In San Salvador, Christian Salazar, UNDP representative in the country, explained the need for a poverty measure that goes beyond income and that is not subject to price and exchange rate volatility. He was joined by Lilian Vega a technical advisor for the multidimensional poverty measurement team who presented the national MPI which has 20 indicators grouped in 5 dimensions. Roberto Lorenzana, the Technical Secretary of the Presidency, closed the event by summing up the relevance of the MPI as a tool for policy.

The third annual meeting of the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network was hosted by the Government of Colombia from 2-3 June 2015 in Cartagena. More than 100 policymakers and senior officials came together for the two-day meeting to discuss developing and applying multidimensional poverty measures.

OPHI is very grateful to have been awarded the Economic and Social Research Council Celebrating Impact Prize. This prize is awarded to ESRC-funded researchers who are achieving outstanding economic and societal impacts through their work. OPHI was awarded the Outstanding International Impact award in 2014 for its continued work towards measuring poverty multidimensionally, in the hopes of designing more effective poverty-reduction programs.
